How does the concrete calculator formula change by shape?

Rectangular forms use length × width × thickness or depth × quantity. Columns and post holes use π × radius² × height or depth × quantity. Solid formed steps use width × rise × run × n(n + 1) ÷ 2, where n is the number of steps. The solid-step formula excludes landings, hollow steps, and irregular forms.

After geometry, the concrete calculator applies the waste percentage once. Whole bags use the selected manufacturer yield and always round upward; ready-mix cubic yards or cubic meters also round to the selected purchase unit.

Concrete calculator worked example

For the default slab-shaped example, 10 ft × 10 ft × 4 in gives about 0.9439 m³ before waste. Adding 5% once gives about 0.9911 m³, or 1.2963 yd³. The concrete calculator therefore rounds a cubic-yard purchase estimate up to 2 whole units.
