How does the concrete calculator formula change by shape?
Rectangular forms use length × width × thickness or depth × quantity. Columns and post holes use π × radius² × height or depth × quantity. Solid formed steps use width × rise × run × n(n + 1) ÷ 2, where n is the number of steps. The solid-step formula excludes landings, hollow steps, and irregular forms.
After geometry, the concrete calculator applies the waste percentage once. Whole bags use the selected manufacturer yield and always round upward; ready-mix cubic yards or cubic meters also round to the selected purchase unit.
Concrete calculator worked example
For the default slab-shaped example, 10 ft × 10 ft × 4 in gives about 0.9439 m³ before waste. Adding 5% once gives about 0.9911 m³, or 1.2963 yd³. The concrete calculator therefore rounds a cubic-yard purchase estimate up to 2 whole units.
If a 60 lb or 80 lb bag is selected, the calculator uses the approximate yield stated in the linked QUIKRETE product data. Confirm the exact product before ordering because a different mix can publish a different yield.
What are the limits of the concrete calculator?
The concrete calculator does not design reinforcement, forms, joints, subbase, drainage, or structural thickness. It assumes the entered shapes match the placed concrete. Irregular excavations, voids, sloped faces, landings, and material lost during placement need project-specific measurement.
Bag yield is a product estimate, not a universal concrete constant. Ready-mix minimum orders, truck access, local code, and supplier rounding remain purchasing decisions outside this calculation.
