What does the gravel calculator calculate?

How does the gravel calculator formula work?
Gravel volume is length × width × depth. Adjusted volume equals base volume multiplied by 1 + waste percentage ÷ 100. Estimated weight equals adjusted volume multiplied by bulk density.
The gravel calculator first converts every dimension to meters, then multiplies them to obtain cubic meters. It applies the allowance to volume before multiplying by the entered kilograms-per-cubic-meter density. The outputs in cubic yards and cubic meters are two units for the same adjusted volume; metric tons and US short tons are two units for the same estimated weight. Do not add those parallel outputs. If only density changes, volume should remain fixed while both weight outputs change proportionally.
Gravel calculator worked example
A bed measuring 10 m by 2 m and 0.1 m deep has a base volume of 2 m³. With 10% waste, the adjusted volume is 2.2 m³. At 1680 kg/m³, the estimated order weight is 3.696 metric tons.
Check the allowance by separating it from the base: ten percent of 2 m³ is 0.2 m³, so the adjusted result is 2.2 m³. Multiplying by 1,680 gives 3,696 kg, and dividing by 1,000 gives the displayed 3.696 metric tons. The gravel calculator will produce a different weight if the supplier density replaces the editable preset, but the 2.2 m³ adjusted volume remains the same. That behavior makes it possible to audit geometry and density independently.
What are the limits of the gravel calculator?
Gravel density changes with stone type, grading, moisture and how loosely it is measured. Compaction also reduces installed depth. Use supplier density and compaction guidance whenever possible, then round the result to the available bag, bulk-bag or truck quantity.
The rectangular model cannot detect slopes, ruts, crowns, curved edges, or an excavation whose depth varies. The gravel calculator also does not choose a base design or turn a compacted requirement into a loose delivery quantity without the allowance you enter. Measure representative depths or divide the site according to the project method, and keep the geometric base, justified allowance, and supplier rounding as separate steps. A bag coverage statement may already include a stated depth, so compare its conditions with the calculation before dividing by bags.
How does the gravel calculator compare with related calculators?
The words gravel and stone can overlap, but supplier products have different densities and grading. This page allows the density to be changed rather than assuming every aggregate weighs the same.
