How does the cubic yard calculator formula work?

When all dimensions are in feet, use cubic yards = length × width × depth ÷ 27. One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. The calculator also converts through exact metric factors so the same result can be displayed in cubic meters.

The factor 27 is a volume conversion, not a material factor. A yard is three feet, and converting all three axes gives 3 × 3 × 3. When inches, centimeters, meters, or yards are selected, the cubic yard calculator first expresses every dimension in feet and then applies the rectangular-prism formula. The cubic-feet, cubic-yard, and cubic-meter outputs are equivalent views of one base volume. Changing reporting units cannot change how much physical space the dimensions enclose.

Cubic yard calculator worked example

A space measuring 3 ft long, 3 ft wide and 3 ft deep contains 27 ft³. Dividing by 27 gives exactly 1 yd³, equivalent to approximately 0.7646 m³.

If the same three numeric entries are used with yards selected instead of feet, the physical dimensions become three times longer along every axis and the volume becomes 27 cubic yards, not one. What are the limits of the cubic yard calculator?

Divide an irregular site into rectangles, calculate each volume separately and add the results. Average several depth measurements when the ground varies, and include a project-specific allowance before ordering.

An average depth is meaningful only when the sampling plan represents the surface. The cubic yard calculator cannot detect a slope, depression, curved boundary, or obstruction from three numbers. It also does not add shrinkage, compaction, spillage, or a supplier’s minimum quantity. Those are material and project decisions outside geometric volume. Keep a measured base volume, any separately justified allowance, and the final order quantity as distinct figures so a reviewer can see where each adjustment entered the estimate.

Cubic yards measure volume, not weight. Soil, gravel, asphalt and concrete have different densities. After finding volume, use the calculator for the specific material to estimate tons and waste.

Use the cubic yard calculator when the delivery or plan is expressed by volume and no density conversion is required. A material-specific calculator asks for density because equal volumes of different materials do not imply equal weights. A square-foot calculator stops at area, making it useful for the footprint but incomplete for a layer with depth. Choosing among them depends on the known inputs and required output, not merely on the project name.

Why divide cubic feet by 27?

A yard contains 3 feet. Cubing that conversion gives 3 × 3 × 3 = 27, so one cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.

This conversion remains exact regardless of the material. Density becomes relevant only when volume is converted to weight, which the cubic yard calculator does not do.

Should I round up when ordering material?

Suppliers sell in fixed increments and real projects have variation. Keep the unrounded result for reference, then round according to the supplier’s order size and project allowance.

Do not round every section before adding them. Add the unrounded section results first, then apply the documented allowance and supplier increment once to the combined quantity.
