What does the sand calculator estimate?

The sand calculator turns length, width, and depth into adjusted volume, then multiplies that volume by an editable bulk density to estimate kilograms, pounds, metric tonnes, and US short tons. The initial 1,650 kg/m³ value is a labeled example within the USDA NRCS range for sand, not a universal material constant.

How does the sand calculator formula work?

Adjusted volume is length × width × depth × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). Weight is adjusted cubic meters multiplied by entered kilograms per cubic meter. The sand calculator converts that same weight into parallel units and rounds a selected tonne purchase upward.

Moisture, grading, void ratio, and compaction change sand bulk density. The sand calculator does not perform geotechnical design, compaction testing, or load-bearing certification. It also cannot determine whether a quoted tonne is metric or US customary unless you choose the matching unit.

The sand calculator requires density because its purchasing decision is weight-based. Gravel has its own product grading and density. Fill dirt separately models target compacted volume and required loose volume before waste, which a simple sand estimate does not.
