It multiplies each score by the fraction of the course assigned to that item or category, then adds the contributions. Enter scores as percentages and weights as percentages that add to 100. If a category contains multiple assignments, calculate that category’s score according to the syllabus first, then apply its category weight. Weights should total 1.00, or 100%.

Assume homework is 20% with a 95% average, exams are 50% with an 82% average, and a project is 30% with a 90% score. Contributions are 19, 41, and 27 points. The weighted course score is 19 + 41 + 27 = 87%. A simple average of 95, 82, and 90 would be 89%, which does not follow the stated weights.

The 82% exam score has the largest influence because it carries half of the modeled course. If the exam average increased by two points while other inputs stayed fixed, the overall result would increase by one point: 2 × 0.50. What are the limits of the weighted grade calculator?

The official course grade can use dropped scores, curved grading, minimum thresholds, replacement rules, extra credit, attendance, late penalties, rounding, or instructor judgment. This calculator cannot infer those policies. It also cannot convert a percentage to a letter grade without the course’s exact scale. Treat the result as a progress estimate and use the learning-management system or instructor for official standing.
